Authority & Verdicts
Canonical, scoped verdicts on how AI/search surfaces rank, cite, and frame brands — source-of-record readings by market, surface, and window. Not promotional rankings.
This page introduces the Authority layer as a public reference. It is descriptive, not promotional.
Quick answer
The Authority layer holds The Observatory's canonical verdicts: scoped readings of how AI and search surfaces rank, cite, and frame brands in a given market, within a stated surface and window. A verdict is a source-of-record reading — a citable reference for that scoped market, surface, and window — not a promotional ranking and not a claim about the business market.

What a verdict is. A verdict stabilizes an observed reading: for a defined market, surface, and window, it states the observed order and the framing around it, derived from governed AAI Kernel intelligence, and it carries a full attestation. A verdict is published only when the underlying reading is governed and scoped; it is never produced from estimated or invented figures.
What a verdict is not. A verdict is not a measure of revenue, market share, or business leadership. A verdict is not a paid placement, and it is not adjusted for any actor. A verdict on an answer surface does not establish that the leading actor is the strongest commercial operator in its market.
The verdict families. The Authority layer organizes verdicts into families, each reading a different facet of authority:
- AI Authority Rankings — the governed authority order for a market on a surface.
- Source-of-Truth Leaders — actors framed as references an answer is organized around.
- Answer-Surface Control Rankings — opening control on the AI Overview.
- Market Authority Rankings — readings ordered by the Market Authority Score.
- Surface Competitor Rankings — platforms, media, and aggregators holding the surface.
- Movers — actors rising or falling across comparable windows.
- Visibility vs Authority Leaders — where surface authority and presence diverge.

How every verdict is scoped. Each verdict states its market, surface, window, source, and limitation. The reading describes the answer surface within those bounds; it is not extended beyond them. The method behind every verdict is governed at the market level and held stable across comparable windows.
Authority vs distribution. The Authority layer is the source-of-record. Rankings published in the editorial desks are the distribution layer: they surface and link back to the canonical verdict rather than creating a separate order.
Evidence-backed verdicts
Source-of-record verdicts are published only where a real governed AAI reading exists, each scoped to a market, surface, and window. Cards, ranking desks, and editorial articles cite these verdicts; they do not create a separate order.

The Observatory's verdicts report observed positioning on defined AI and search surfaces within a stated scope and time window. A verdict is not a measure of real-world revenue, market share, or business leadership.
