Answer Surfaces
The answer surfaces covered in Observatory public readings: AI Overviews, large-language-model answers, the organic surface, and source panels — each read separately, never blended.
This page defines the answer surfaces covered in Observatory public readings. It is a public reference.

Applies to: Observatory readings that name which surface a result is read on
Status: Definitions govern downstream Observatory usage
Quick answer
An answer surface is any surface where a response is assembled and displayed. Several distinct answer surfaces are read separately in Observatory public readings, because an actor can be strong on one surface and weak on another.
Core definition
An answer surface is any surface where a response is assembled and displayed — and each one is read separately in Observatory public readings.
Interpretation rules
- Each answer surface is read separately; surfaces are never blended into a single number.
- A result is always attributed to a named surface (AI Overview, LLM answer, organic, source panel) and a window.
- Within the AI Overview, the opening is read separately from the rest of the answer.
- The gap between two surfaces is reported as surface divergence, never averaged away.
Purpose & scope
Why this page exists. A single "AI visibility" number hides exactly the tensions worth reporting; this page sets the named surfaces and the rule that each is read on its own.
Where it applies. Every reading that attributes a result to a surface, and every comparison between surfaces, applies this definition.

The observed surfaces.
- AI Overview (AIO) — the AI-generated answer shown at the top of a Google results page. Within the AIO, the opening — the actor or source the answer opens with — carries high framing influence.
- Large-language-model answers — the composed replies returned by assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity to a market question.
- Organic surface — the classic ranked-link results observed for a query, distinct from any AI-generated answer.
- Source panels — the citation and reference panels through which an answer attributes its sources.

Why surfaces are read separately. Each surface composes a market differently. The organic surface can rank an actor highly while an AI Overview opens with a different one; one model can cite a source another model omits. Blending surfaces into one number would hide exactly the tensions worth reporting. The Observatory keeps surface readings distinct and reports the gaps between them as surface divergence.
Scope. Each surface reading is taken within a stated scope and time window, under a governed method, and reported with attestation.
What it is / what it is not
It is
- the named surfaces observed — AI Overview, LLM answers, organic surface, source panels — each read on its own
It is not
- one blended "AI visibility" score
- the business market
- the internal ranking systems behind any surface
Common misinterpretations this page prevents
“AI visibility is one number.”
Surfaces are read separately because an actor strong on one can be weak on another; collapsing them into a single figure would hide the divergence that is often the real finding.
“The organic ranking and the AI Overview say the same thing.”
They frequently diverge — the organic surface can rank one actor while the AIO opens with another. That divergence is reported as a reading in its own right, not smoothed away.
“Being in the source panel means leading the answer.”
Citation in the source panel is read separately from the opening and from rank; a cited source need not be the actor the answer is built around.
How this page governs downstream readings
Where a downstream output presents "AI visibility" as one undifferentiated figure, this definition prevails:
- A card or verdict states the surface and reads the opening separately.
- A Decision Guide that interprets a result distinguishes the surface it was taken on.
- Cross-surface gaps are labelled as surface divergence.
Relationship to other references
- Citation Surface & Source Share — how an answer attributes its sources is one of the surfaces read here.
- Surface Divergence — the gaps between these surfaces are reported as divergence.
- AI-Shaped Search — these surfaces are the territory AI-shaped search spans.
- AIO Intelligence — reads the AI Overview as an answer surface distinct from organic results.
- Spotlight — isolates the entities one answer surface names on one exact query.
Canonical notice
This is a canonical reference. It defines the answer surfaces observed and how each is read in Observatory public readings, and that definition governs every downstream use across the site. It does not itself rank, promote, or measure commercial outcomes. Where an editorial page, a card, or a market reading appears to conflict with this definition, this reference prevails.
