Canonical Glossary
Stable definitions for AI-search market reading — written to stand on their own and to be cited directly.
These are the canonical definitions used across The Observatory. Each term is defined once here; other pages reuse these definitions without redefining them.
Canonical Glossary (Reference Library index) · Reference Library · v1.2 · Last reviewed 2026-06-03
Applies to: Every defined term used across Observatory public readings
Status: Canonical — one definition per concept, governing downstream usage
This glossary defines the vocabulary The Observatory uses to read AI behavior across markets. Each definition is written to stand on its own and to be cited directly.
How to read The Observatory
- Answer Layer
- The answer layer is the surface where AI assistants, AI overviews and search engines decide which brands and actors get named, cited and framed. The Observatory reads this layer market by market.
- Reference — Answer Surfaces →Method — what we measure →
- Deep Narrative Capture (DNC)DNC
- Deep Narrative Capture records the response of a named AI system or answer product about a market, with its mode or surface identified verbatim. Its governed public reading may select, contextualize and interpret that response without silently changing it; narrative framing remains separate from measured position and scores.
- Reference — Deep Narrative Capture (DNC) →Method — narrative capture →DNC Lens — Thailand →
- Market Intelligence Board (MIB)MIB
- The Market Intelligence Board is the governed set of metric cards The Observatory draws from — each card scoped to one market, one surface and one observation window.
- Method — source protocol →
- Entity
- An entity is the actor or source whose identity a reading establishes, such as a brand, operator, platform or institution. A name, a cited domain and an underlying business are not automatically interchangeable identities.
- Decision Guide — Why Is My Brand Missing from AI Answers? →Reference — Citation Surface & Source Share →
- Capture
- A Capture is the recorded source output and provenance from which a governed Observation is established. A Capture is not automatically a public raw-data payload.
- Reference — Attestation Standard →
- Observation
- An Observation is a dated governed record of what was observed within a defined market, surface and scope. When published by The Observatory, its stated basis and window bound what the public record supports.
- Reference — Attestation Standard →
- Reading Basis
- The reading basis is the stated scope of a figure: the surface it describes, the observation window, and the run count behind it. Every Observatory metric carries one, so a number can be read rather than assumed.
- Method — reading basis & standards →
- Observatory Reading
- An Observatory Reading is the citable, copy-ready unit on a card: one atomic, scoped and dated claim plus a few supporting facts, signed by The Observatory and emitted identically in the page's structured data.
- Example — Thailand monthly top 5 →
- Proof Capsule
- A Proof Capsule is a prepared public reuse package for an eligible Observatory Reading, carrying the scope, provenance, source, limitations and permitted reuse context needed to cite it faithfully.
- Reference — Attestation Standard →
- Quick Answer
- A Quick Answer is a concise, self-contained summary of a card, Reference page or Decision Guide. It states the central finding, definition or answer with the qualifications needed to understand and reuse it.
- See — Observatory Reading →
Surfaces
- Organic Surface
- The organic surface is the conventional ranked list of links a search engine returns. The Observatory reports who holds it separately from who holds the AI-mediated surfaces above it.
- Reference — Answer Surfaces →Example — Ibiza organic top 5 →
- Citation Surface
- The citation surface is where an AI answer attributes its sources. Being cited here is distinct from ranking organically and from holding the AIO opening — three different forms of presence.
- Reference — Citation Surface & Source Share →See — Presence, citation, framing →
- Brand Mention vs Citation
- A mention names a brand in an answer; a citation explicitly attributes support to a source, usually through a cited URL. A cited third-party page about a brand is not the same source relationship as a citation to the brand's own website, and neither alone establishes a recommendation.
- Reference — Citation Surface & Source Share →
- AI Overview (AIO)AIO
- An AI Overview (AIO) is a generated answer shown within a search engine’s results. Its mentions, cited sources and opening actor or source are distinct observed roles; a citation does not, by itself, establish a recommendation.
- Reference — Answer Surfaces →Method — surface mechanics →
- AIO Opening
- The AIO Opening is the actor or source identified as opening an AI Overview under the applicable capture rule. It is read separately from citation order, organic rank and any explicit recommendation.
- Reference — Citation Surface & Source Share →
- Observed Organic Coverage
- Observed organic coverage is the share of the organic surface an actor holds across the runs in a window — a measured presence rate, not a claim of market leadership.
- Reference — Citation Surface & Source Share →See — Reading Basis →
- Surface Tier
- A surface tier groups actors by the strength of their position on a given surface — leader, contested, periphery — so a leaderboard can be read as a structure, not just a column of ranks.
- Reference — Citation Surface & Source Share →See — Contested Band →
- Contested Band
- The contested band is the range of positions on a surface where no actor holds a stable lead and ranks shift run to run — distinct from the settled top and the periphery.
- Reference — Citation Surface & Source Share →See — Surface Tier →
Desks & cadence
- Ranking
- A ranking is an Observatory card reporting who the answer layer names first on a market and surface, ordered by observed position over a stated window.
- Reference — Ranking vs Behavior →
- Movers
- Movers is the desk tracking which actors gain or lose position on a surface between windows — who is rising and who is slipping, with the reason read from the surface.
- Battles
- Battles is the desk of head-to-head comparisons — platform versus operator, one model versus another, one market versus another — that point back to the relevant ranking rather than creating their own.
- Spotlight
- Spotlight is the desk built around a single query: what one premium question returns on a given surface, and which actors the models name in response to it.
- See — Sentinel Query →
- DNC Lens
- DNC Lens publishes governed readings of captured market accounts from named AI systems or answer products, with their modes or surfaces identified. Captured words remain verbatim; narrative representation stays distinct from measured positions and scores.
- Method — narrative capture →
- Model Watch
- Model Watch compares captured market accounts to show both convergence and divergence in actors, roles, subjects or market structure. A comparison may involve one model across modes, different models, or a model and another AI answer product. Each source and its mode or surface are identified.
- See the Model Watch desk →
- Cadence
- Cadence is the recurring rhythm of observation or publication. A single observation and a period aggregate are different reading bases: a period brings comparable observations together, with its actual coverage and limitations. Aggregation alone does not establish stability or a trend.
- Method — reading basis & standards →
AI treatment & method
- Signal Style
- A signal style is the role an AI model assigns an actor when it names it — opening sentence, benchmark, platform, curated, example.
- Reference — Signal Styles →Method — surface mechanics →
- Platform Capture
- Platform capture describes a prominent platform role on an observed surface, such as an organic position, AI opening or citation host. It identifies who occupies attention or reference space around a market; it does not by itself establish that a particular operator was commercially displaced.
- Reference — Surface Competitors →Method — platform capture →
- Source-of-Record
- A Source-of-Record is the traceable canonical publication of a scoped observation or claim. The Observatory aims to become a widely used reference for observed AI and search positioning in premium markets.
- Sentinel Query
- A sentinel query is a fixed, representative question The Observatory tracks over time to see which actors an AI surface names for it — the unit by which presence on the answer layer is observed.
- Method — what we measure →
Foundations
- AI-Shaped Search
- The ecosystem of answer-generating surfaces — AI Overviews, large-language-model answers, and source panels — through which audiences increasingly discover and compare brands.
- Reference — AI-Shaped Search →
- Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)GEO
- Generative engine optimization (GEO) is a market label for practices concerned with visibility in generative AI answers. The label does not establish a standardized method or a proven effect; any claim still needs a defined measure, scope and supporting evidence.
- Reference — AI-Shaped Search →Decision Guide — Verifying a GEO, AEO or AI visibility claim →
- Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)AEO
- Answer engine optimization (AEO) is a market label for practices concerned with visibility in answer-generating systems. The label alone does not establish what was measured or whether an intervention changed the observed result.
- Reference — AI-Shaped Search →Decision Guide — Verifying a GEO, AEO or AI visibility claim →
- Answer Surface
- Any surface where a response is assembled and displayed, including AI Overviews, LLM answers, organic results, and source panels.
- Reference — Answer Surfaces →
- AI Behavior Intelligence
- AI behavior is how AI and search systems treat a market: who they rank, who they cite, who they open with, who they frame as a reference, and who they displace over time. AI behavior intelligence is the governed reading of that behavior across surfaces, models, and time windows.
- Reference — AI Behavior Intelligence →
- Ranking vs Behavior
- A ranking is one public expression of AI behavior. Every Observatory ranking is a scoped reading, not universal truth.
- Reference — Ranking vs Behavior →
Authority & Positioning
- AI Visibility
- AI visibility concerns whether an actor appears on a named AI answer surface within a stated scope and window. Presence alone does not establish citation, reference treatment or an explicit recommendation.
- Reference — Visibility vs Authority →
- Surface Competitor
- A surface competitor is an actor that competes for visibility, citation, or framing on an answer surface without necessarily being a commercial operator in the underlying market.
- Reference — Surface Competitors →
- Business Market vs Positioning Surface
- The business market is where commercial activity happens: who operates, transacts, and serves customers in a category. The positioning surface is where visibility, citation, and framing are contested in AI-shaped search.
- Reference — Business Market vs Positioning Surface →
- Surface Divergence
- A measured gap between two surfaces — organic versus AIO, or one model versus another.
- Reference — Surface Divergence →
Measurement & Governance
- Official vs Narrative Layer
- The official layer is The Observatory's governed, measured reading of position, presence and citation on a surface; the narrative layer (Deep Narrative Capture) is the reading of how an actor is framed — role clarity, trust, narrative fragility.
- Reference — Official vs Narrative Layer →
- Market-Centric vs Client-Centric
- The separation between public market-level reading, which is published, and private client-level diagnostics, which are never published.
- Reference — Market-Centric vs Client-Centric →
- Public Reading Boundaries
- Every public Observatory reading describes observed positioning on a defined AI or search surface, within a stated scope and time window.
- Reference — Public Reading Boundaries →
- Attestation Standard
- The disclosure attached to a reading: scope, basis, window, source, and limitation.
- Reference — Attestation Standard →
- Benchmark Governance
- Benchmark governance is the set of rules that keep The Observatory's method stable and neutral.
