Citation Surface & Source Share

AI citation share: which actors and sources AI answers cite, on a defined surface and window. Citation, opening and recommendation are read separately, and none is rank.

This page defines citation behavior as a public reference concept. It is descriptive, not promotional.

Canonical Reference · Reference Library · v1.2 · Last reviewed 2026-06-03

Applies to: Observatory readings of where and how often an actor is cited as a source, and who controls the opening

Status: Definitions govern downstream Observatory usage

Quick answer

The citation surface is where, and how often, an actor is cited as a source within AI answers. Source share reads the distribution of those citations across the actors in a market. Opening control reads which actor an answer opens with. Citation behavior is a dimension of authority distinct from ranking: an actor can be cited heavily without leading a list, and lead a list without being cited as a source.

Core definition

The citation surface is where, and how often, an actor is cited as a source within AI answers; source share reads the distribution of those citations, and opening control reads which actor an answer opens with — a dimension of authority distinct from rank.

Interpretation rules

  1. Being cited as a source is read separately from being mentioned or listed.
  2. Source share is read across the market — concentrated share can indicate a reference; thin share, presence without reliance.
  3. Opening control is read separately from rank and from overall citation count.
  4. Citation behavior describes how an answer is built, not only what order it lists.

Purpose & scope

Why this page exists. An actor can be cited heavily without leading a list, and lead a list without being cited as a source; reading citation behavior on its own is what separates visibility from authority.

Where it applies. Every reading that interprets sourcing, source share, or the opening applies this definition.

Citation surface. The citation surface records which actors an answer attributes its claims to. Being cited as a source is usually a stronger observed signal than being mentioned, because a cited source is presented as support for the answer rather than only as an item in a list.

Source share. Source share reads how citations are distributed: whether one actor anchors most of an answer's sourcing, or whether sourcing is spread across many. A concentrated source share can indicate that a surface treats an actor as a reference. A thin or intermittent share can indicate that an actor is present but not consistently relied upon.

Opening control. Within an AI Overview, the opening is the actor or source identified as opening the answer under the applicable capture rule. Opening control describes that observed role. It is read separately from organic rank, citation count and source-panel order; the first cited source is not automatically the opening actor or source.

Mention, citation, opening and recommendation. A mention names an actor in the visible answer. A citation explicitly attributes support to a source, usually through a cited URL. An opening identifies the actor or source the answer opens with under the applicable capture rule. A recommendation requires explicit language or context presenting an actor as a choice to consider. These roles can overlap, but none implies the others. A citation to a brand-owned URL and a citation to a third-party page discussing that brand are different source relationships. These observations describe the visible answer; they do not establish what was crawled, indexed or retrieved internally, or how the model reasoned.

Why citation behavior is read on its own. Citation, source share, and opening control describe how an answer is built, not only what order it lists. Reading them alongside rank is what separates visibility from authority.

What it is / what it is not

It is

  • where and how often an actor is cited as a source, plus source share and opening control
  • a dimension of authority distinct from rank

It is not

  • the same as rank or overall presence
  • a measure of the business market

Common misinterpretations this page prevents

“Being mentioned and being cited as a source are the same thing.”

A cited source is presented as support for the answer, not only as an item in a list. Citation is usually a stronger observed signal than mention, and it is read separately.

“The top-ranked actor controls the opening.”

Opening control is read separately from rank and from citation count; the actor an answer opens with need not be the one that tops the list or is cited most.

How this page governs downstream readings

Where a downstream output reads rank as citation, this definition prevails:

  • An Authority verdict reports citation behavior and opening control separately from rank.
  • A card that names a cited source distinguishes citation from mention.
  • A Decision Guide reads source share alongside the order, not instead of it.

Canonical notice

This is a canonical reference. It defines how citation behavior and source share are read and published in Observatory public readings, and that definition governs every downstream use across the site. It does not itself rank, promote, or measure commercial outcomes. Where an editorial page, a card, or a market reading appears to conflict with this definition, this reference prevails.
